Upcoming SolusOS 2 ISO
About the upcoming ISO
We're now completing the final steps required to build a basic demonstration ISO of the new SolusOS 2.
Please read this post so that you can fully understand exactly what we intend to achieve with this ISO, what's
in it, and what's most definitely not
What it is
The ISO is intended to be a demonstration of SolusOS 2. This should not be considered a traditional alpha or beta release. Our intent here is to demonstrate the base functionality of
SolusOS 2 to our userbase. We like to keep our users in the loop, and firmly believe that this would be the best way to do it right now.
So what'll be in the ISO? Firstly, it's going to be a basic live environment. We're not looking to ship an installable/persistent ISO right yet, that's not the focus of this ISO. We're going
to include the latest builds of the Consort Desktop, which is now based on GTK3.6. We'll ship the majority of the GNOME stack with this ISO for experimentation, much as you would
find in the SolusOS LiveCD's.
What it isn't
This is not an alpha, beta, RC or final release of SolusOS 2 and should not be used for comparative or persistent purposes. It will not be installable; we'll leave that to later on in the
actual release cycle. We won't be including Firefox, VLC, etc, as these are components not vital to the function of the operating system, and are not in need of testing yet.
We're also not looking at proprietary driver or printer support, or indeed any peripheral device beyond the standard components required to run tests. This, again, is going to be
a demonstration ISO, from which our users can see our ideas manifested, and gain their first experiences of the future of SolusOS 2.
When's it coming?
We're doing a full rebuild of the repository right now, ensuring there will be no base issues with the system, before continuing to finish the GNOME stack and Consort. Naturally we'll
want to run our own tests prior to putting something out. Myself and Justin would like to put a rough figure of 1-2 weeks for this ISO, factoring in mirror syncs and testing times, but
as anyone knows, these things take time. Just know that it is coming, and be sure to check back with the blog :)
